Kait’s Bookshelf Privacy Policy

kait_webThe General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) goes into effect tomorrow, May 25, 2018. While this applies to organizations within the European Union and Kait’s Bookshelf is based out of the U.S., the website does get visitors from all over the world. Since the Kait’s Bookshelf blog and services are not exclusive to U.S. residents, I felt I should comply with the GDPR and post the Kait’s Bookshelf privacy policy in plain English. This way everyone understands exactly what happens when you like or comment on a post on Kait’s Bookshelf or sign up for notifications with your email address or WordPress account.

How Personal Information is Used:

Online privacy and data protection are important. You are not required to provide any personal information such as your name, email address, or phone number in order to visit Kait’s Bookshelf or read the blog. The Kait’s Bookshelf website is hosted through WordPress.com and it does use cookies from WordPress.com and selected partners. Cookies are information files about your session. For example, information may be collected about what pages you visited on the website and how long you stayed there. If you would like to find out more information, as well as how to remove and block cookies, you may visit the WordPress Cookie Policy here.

Liking and Commenting on Posts and Pages on Kait’s Bookshelf:

If you’d like to interact with the Kait’s Bookshelf blog posts, then you will be required to set up a WordPress account. WordPress has their own privacy policy and terms of service that will apply if you create a WordPress account.

If you create a WordPress account and like or comment on blog posts or pages on Kait’s Bookshelf, then your likes, comments, and profile name will be visible to anyone who visits the blog posts or pages of the Kait’s Bookshelf website. If you would like to delete comments once you’ve made them, then you just need to visit your comment on the page or blog post, select “edit,” and choose the delete or trash option. If you do not see an “edit” option or are unable to delete the comment, then feel free to email me at kait at kaitsbookshelf dot com with the specific comment and blog post title and request that it be deleted. You will receive a confirmation email once the comment has been deleted.

Subscribing to the Kait’s Bookshelf Blog:

If you create a WordPress account then you will also have the option of subscribing to the Kait’s Bookshelf blog. You can do this by clicking the Follow Kait’s Bookshelf button on the Home page or any other page on the website. Once you’ve clicked the follow button, you will receive a notification to the email address associated with your WordPress account each time a new blog post is published on Kait’s Bookshelf. If at any time you wish to stop receiving notifications, or unsubscribe, you may opt out on the website by clicking Following Kait’s Bookshelf. You may also use the Unsubscribe link that is at the bottom of each notification email. Once unsubscribed, you will no longer receive notifications from Kait’s Bookshelf, and your email and WordPress profile will not be stored by Kait’s Bookshelf.

In the past, visitors to the website have been able to subscribe to the blog via email as an alternative to creating a WordPress account. However, Kait’s Bookshelf is not accepting email subscribers at this time. This is due to the amount of spam subscribers that were being received and has nothing to do with privacy issues. It was really just becoming very time consuming sorting through all the spam email addresses. WordPress is working on this issue and once it is resolved, email subscriptions will open again. Anyone who has previously signed up for a Kait’s Bookshelf email subscription will continue to receive an email notification each time a new blog is published. If those receiving the emails decide they no longer wish to receive them, an unsubscribe button can be found at the bottom of each email. Once unsubscribed, your email address will be deleted from the Kait’s Bookshelf subscriber list.

Literary Services:

If you are interested in literary services from Kait’s Bookshelf, such as freelance writing or editing services, then please feel free to email me at kait at kaitsbookshelf dot com. There is no form for you to complete or information to submit through the website, so you will just need to email me your name and what service(s) you are interested in. At that point, our correspondence will be subject to the Google privacy policy which can be viewed here.

That’s the Kait’s Bookshelf privacy policy in a nutshell. Please feel free to reach out to me at kait at kaitsbookshelf dot com should you have any questions about the privacy policy, the website in general, or about literary services.
