stinky-goblin-in-the-shedI was introduced to Andrea Kaczmarek’s writing for young people last year with Puddle’s Wondrous Worry Dolls, and if you missed that review, you can read it here. There’s a Stinky Goblin in the Shed is another great story from Kaczmarek with a magical element to it.

In this story, Ms. Kaczmarek introduces the reader to Jerry and Jacob, fraternal twins who make a fort out of their Gran’s old shed. As little boys will do, the twins begin to feel adventurous and brave while camping out in the shed and decide to take a walk through the woods at night. It was certainly creepy and of all the things they imagined they might encounter, they never imagined a goblin!

There’s a Stinky Goblin in the Shed is a fun story for a middle grade reading level. It has adventure, laughs, and a surprise twist that I enjoyed. Hob the Goblin is quite the entertaining character and I got a few laughs out of his sister, Bob the Goblin, as well. This story is filled with adventures, lots of food, elf shoes, and Goblin selfies!

I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I will say that the story is told from varying points of view which make this story unique to other middle grade stories I have read. The characters were likable and memorable, which is important to middle grade books because, the characters need to stand out from other popular characters.

I would recommend this book for young readers looking for a fun adventure. I think it would be a good chapter-a-night book for parents to read with their kids. Although I am trying to get away from a star rating system because I feel too many books get dismissed too quickly by potential readers that way, I will give this book 4 out of 5 stars!

There’s a Stinky Goblin in the Shed releases from Ravenswood Publishing/Sunquills on March 10, 2017 and is available for pre-order on Amazon.

One of my favorite passages from the book:

“Not hot on table manners, these goblins.” Jerry pulled a face at his brother.

“Table? What is table?” Hob asked and half the jam tart crumbs fell out of his mouth. He scooped them back in. “This is good. Very good.” He nodded vigorously while his hand grabbed a chocolate biscuit and shoved the whole thing into his mouth.

“Do you think ‘goblin’ comes from ‘gobble’?” said Jerry, deciding to move the packets of biscuits out of goblin reach. – There’s a Stinky Goblin in the Shed
