Now That Its You

I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley. I seem to be on a roll recently with romances and the description from the publisher was intriguing so I decided to give it a shot.

I give this book two thumbs up for plot. It was very creative. I wasn’t sure at first if I was supposed to sympathize with Meg who left her ex-fiance, Matt, at the altar or if I was supposed to dislike her. Cue Matt’s unexpected and permanent departure from Meg’s life just as she is ready to make amends to kick my sympathies for her into high gear. What a confusing and emotional thing to have to deal with. Then throw in Matt’s sexy, artistic brother, Kyle, to make things even more complicated. The plot was complex with surprises I didn’t see coming.

While the beginning of the book was fast paced and kept surprising me, by the middle I felt it had slowed down quite a bit. It seemed like Meg and Kyle were having the same conversation over and over again as well as Meg and Sylvia. Without giving away any spoilers, I felt that Meg forgave Kyle way too easily for his betrayals. A betrayal from someone who loves you would seem to me to be harder to get over than someone who didn’t really love you, yet Meg spent two years still not making amends with Matt and then forgave Kyle almost immediately. It just felt a little off to me.

I enjoyed the humor in this book, much of it supplied by Jess, Meg’s friend and a good supporting character. Sylvia was also a very believable, if not the most believable, character of all. Her emotions were so raw and real. I didn’t read her as someone who was bitter or out for revenge but as a desperate and grieving mother. This book was a quick, easy read perfect for beach reading and book clubs. I think we’ve all dated a Matt at some point, and I’m sure this book could spark hours of conversation regarding Matt and Meg, Kyle and Meg, Sylvia and Meg, and even Meg’s parents. This book is like reading a game of relationship roulette! It keeps you guessing and surprised and I didn’t find it falling into the romance novel cliché category at all.

My Review: 3 out of 5 stars

Now That It’s You will be available on September 6, 2016 from Amazon.com

One of my favorite passages from the book:

“’It was even pretty good, most of the time,’ Meg sniffed. ‘At least I thought it was.’

Jess nodded, her hands still warm on Meg’s knees. ‘When did you stop thinking that?’

Meg hesitated, knowing the answer before her brain formed the words. ‘…When I saw how different it could be.’

Jess nodded and reached for Meg’s hands. ‘I know. It’s like spending your whole life wearing the wrong-sized bra and not realizing it. Then when you finally get the right size, you wonder how you never noticed before how uncomfortable you were.’

‘Yes,’ Meg said softly. ‘That’s it exactly.’”   – Now That It’s You
